Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effect of the use of kaolin as a fine substitute material characteristics of the concrete mixture, to analyze  the strong pressure of the concrete by using kaolin as a substitute for fine aggregate at the age of 3, 7, and 28 days and deformation characteristics of pavement layer stiffness in the subgrade layer with a certain dial distance from the load center. The study was conducted experimentally in materials and structures building Laboratory of Civil Department  of Engineering Faculty at Hasanuddin University. Objects in this study is a concrete K-300 which uses kaolin material as substitute for fine aggregate material with a mixed variation of 0%, 5% and 10% for the cylinder specimen while 0% and 5% for the plate specimen. The results showed that the compressive strength of concrete cylinder is the highest in a mixture of normal concrete (0%) amounting to 350.07 kg/cm2 and the  lowest in the concrete mix by 10% kaolin at 308.72 kg/cm2. Kaolin compound in clay that is able to form a layer of mud due the mixing of water during the casting process. This causes the bond of paste to the aggregate is weakened so that the concrete strength enhancement mechanism that relies on bonds between its constituent elements does not occur optimally. And the imposition of rigid pavement layers was obtained deformation occurred as the addition of kaolin on a rigid pavement on the dial 1 (S0), dial 2 (S1), dial 3 (S2) within 5, 15 and 30 cm respectively from the load center on the contrete 0% with the addition of 5% kaolin then the bending deformation of rigid pavement will increase  (maximally) of normal concrete (0%).
